What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Modern car keys come with unique chips that are unique to each vehicle, which is not the case with older keys. This prevents thieves from just using the key to start the car.

Transponder Codes

When a transponder is interrogated, it sends a signal encoded with a four-digit code. This signal, referred to as a SQUAWK Code is used to locate aircraft on radar screens. It is also used to transmit an exact message to air traffic control in the event of an emergency or to alert air traffic controllers to changing weather conditions. Squawk codes are commonly used to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot cannot communicate via radio. They are crucial to ensure safe flying.

Every aircraft has a transponder which responds to radar interrogation by displaying an identifier code. This enables ATC to locate the aircraft in a busy radar screen. Transponders come in a variety of modes that vary in how they respond to questions. Mode A only transmits the code, while mode C also provides altitude information. Mode S transponders send more detailed information such as callsigns and position. This is useful in airspace that is crowded.

PIN Codes

A PIN code is a collection of numbers (usually between four and six digits) that can be used to gain access to an item or system. PIN codes are used to protect ATM and POS transactions[1], secure access control (doors computers, cars),[2] and internet transactions.

Although a longer PIN may appear to be more secure than a shorter one, it is possible to hack or guess even the four-digit PIN. It is recommended that a PIN must be at minimum six digits long using the combination of letters and numbers to give more security. PIN codes are often required by some OEMs to allow aftermarket key programmers as a security measure to ensure that they are not used by non-authorized people to harvest data from the modules.

VIN Numbers

VIN numbers are used to identify vehicles and provide an abundance of information about them. VIN numbers are unique to every vehicle on the planet, except for alien cars (or whatever). The 17 numbers of a VIN code are a combination of numbers and letters that can be decoded in order to reveal vital information about your vehicle or truck.

A VIN number is made up of various sections, each of which contains specific information. In North America, 10th through 17th numbers of the VIN are referred to as the Vehicle Identification Section (VIS). The tenth number indicates the year of the vehicle's production, and the eleventh digit is a clue to the assembly plant that made the vehicle. The tenth to seventeenth digits may also contain additional information such as features or options included in the vehicle.
